Secret World Books
“We all carry secret worlds within us” says author and co-owner of Secret World Books, Gayle Brandeis. Secret World Books got its name from Brandeis’ first novel, written at 8 years old, The Secret World, inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden. When looking at potential bookstore locations, Brandeis noticed the “secret garden” attached to 1774 Second St., and the rest is history.
Opened in the spring of 2024, Secret World Books carries thousands of new and second-hand books, comics, and other wonders. Notably, Secret World Books makes a point to carry and feature works from underrepresented authors and small presses. Additionally, Secret World Books is a gathering place for the community; hosting multiple workshops and events monthly.
When asked what inspired Brandeis to open Secret World Books, she stated that she wanted to create a space which was a “source of joy and healing, and a force for beautiful things in the community.”
